Ursae
Ursae EP
Genre: Avant-Pop
Release Date: February 17, 2017
Label: Independent
Andrew Campbell (better known by his stage name Ursae) knows how to arrange a track and make it emotionally impactful. It's evident from listening to the five songs that make up his self-titled debut EP. Throughout the short EP, Campbell is able to blend organic instruments (guitar, drums, and even flute) with the non-organic (synthesizers, programming, electronics) in order to seamlessly bring his avant-pop style of musicianship to life.
The songs on the self-titled EP are short, but they indeed hit home, reflecting on love, loss, and all those things that we're indeed thinking about as we read this review, trying as hard as we can to get 'that person' out of our heads, when we really know that we never will. Campbell blends simplistic chord progressions against elements like guitar and drums, building up into an emotional crescendo with each chorus and melody throughout the EP. It's worth a listen, and it gives an introduction to what we can expect from an act like Ursae in the future.
