I think it's safe to say at this point that while pop-punk is an enjoyable genre as a whole, a lot of it has started to sound the same. This is the case with any genre, really. One type of band within a sub-genre makes it big, then you get a plethora of bands trying to copy and sound exactly like it. Only a few remain when all is said and done, as they're the ones that craft out their sound to be individualistic and set apart from the rest. And then you have a band like Underdog Champs, who don't seem to go along with the trends.
Their newest EP, Skeletons in Daylight, hits that spot in the genre that fell right between the new wave of pop-punk, and one of the first waves of it in the early 2000s, creating sounds reminiscent of bands you'd see out on the Vans Warped Tour or opening up for Fall Out Boy during their 'Take This To Your Grave' era. The seven track EP is insanely catchy, with tracks reminiscent of the kind of pop-punk sound you'd get during the days of MySpace. It's straight to the point, fun, and it's devoid of any feeling of 'trying to fit in' with the crowd. Sometimes having a bit of "throwback" sound can be an awesome thing.
