They're a unique new brand of pop and rock has made its way onto the alternative rock scene. They're called Echo Black, and if you're a fan of the genre, it will do you well to know who they are. Considering the fact that they recently premiered a new music video and track entitled "Perfect" featuring The Word Alive's Telle Smith, Echo Black is a band that shouldn't be missed. I recently had the chance to speak with vocalist Danny Blu about the song "Perfect", working with Telle Smith and producer Nick Scott, and much more! (And watch the music video below!!)
Congratulations on the premiere of your single, "Perfect"! It sounds awesome. How did your collaboration with Telle Smith of The Word Alive come about?
Thank you!! Yeah, we're incredibly humbled by the amount of support the track and video relieved. 10,000 shares on AltPress was mind blowing. The collaboration was actually something we couldn't be happier with. Telle has this harsh quality to his voice that brings a different interpretation in while still maintaining the inherent mystery of the track. He killed it for sure.
You worked with producer Nick Scott on this song. What did he bring to the table for the band as a producer?
Nick is a monster. He is one of the most creative people I've ever met. When we brought these tracks to him (he also produced Burn Another Day) he was stoked to work on some pop material. I think his additions to the production of "Perfect" really made it what it became. And helped us to define our sound. He can play, I think, every instrument.
Is this track, dare I say, going to be featured on an upcoming album or EP? If so, how far into the writing process for said album did this track come about?
We're allllllllways writing... Our process varies from song to song so there are always like a dozen songs in the works at any given time. Not quite sure if it'll be an EP or album at this point, but we definitely have more material to put out very soon!
Were there any major challenges for you in terms of writing this track, creatively or logistically?
I think, personally, there was a hesitation in this track even existing for Echo Black. I had written the vocal melody about 5 years back when we were still going under the name "Danny Blu." Taking that melody and breaking it down and building an Echo Black track was daunting in my mind. But I think it turned out pretty well.
What kind of message, if you have one, would you like fans to walk away with after listening to this track?
I wouldn't say there is a specific message from this track, but there is a message that lies behind all of our music: everyone is the same and we all feel the same emotions. We write music that you feel viscerally. It's honest and true. So if this song makes you happy or sad or lonely or depressed or nostalgic, go with it. Feel those things.
Finally, and this is a question I ask every artist I interview to close things out: what does music mean to you?
Music has always meant "community" to me. Because I can have a conversation with someone who plays classical cello merely because we, basically, have the same job. It's an art form that brings people to together in a magical way.
