Nothing can hold Frank Iero down. Not chronic digestive issues that have plagued him most of his life, not a bus that collided into his band’s van in Australia last summer that caused him and two of his band members to be hospitalized and incapacitated for a number of weeks. Because even when things seem like they could be at their darkest, he emerges with a slew of material that translates that pain and emotion into raw and powerful art. Keep The Coffins Coming, the newest EP from the New Jersey singer-songwriter brings forth his most straightforward and honest work yet. This could be considered just a sampling, however, as Iero released his sophomore LP Parachutes late last year (and we recommend you go pick that up as well).

The EP’s opening track, “I'm A Mess”, enters the atmosphere with the ringing feedback of an electric guitar before bringing forth an adrenaline-fueled onslaught of East Coast punk rock that you’d hear if CBGB in New York was still around today. The mid-tempo “B.F.F.” shifts gears into the territory of 90’s alternative rock with a chorus filled with lyrics about the changes in a personal relationship. “No Fun Club” (my personal favorite) clocks in under two minutes, bringing forth a hardcore punk offering that is guaranteed to forge at least three mosh pits when brought into the live show environment. The EP concludes with a hauntingly beautiful rendition of “You Are My Sunshine” (originally by The Pine Ridge Boys).

Bottom line: if you ever find yourself in the position where someone asks you who Frank Iero is and what his music sounds like, pull out Keep The Coffins Coming. It’s short, sweet, and straight to the point. It offers the perfect representation of where Iero’s music is able to go and where it can take you. I assure you you’ll want to come along for the ride.
