These are trying times, as it's clear to see whenever you turn on a television set, walk by a newspaper kiosk, or even scroll through Facebook. We're at a difficult period in history right now; the recent election demonstrated just how truly divided we are as a country. In times like these, people turn to the arts for comfort, for confirmation that they're not alone in their thinking, for feeling that they truly belong. John Nolan, one of the members of alternative rock act Taking Back Sunday, decided to harness the power of music, and through collaboration with Collective Confusion Records, Hopeless Records (and their non-profit Sub-City), released Music For Everyone: A Compilation to Benefit the ACLU.
The compilation is a unique offering of tracks from artists throughout the punk and emo music scenes, and it features a number of b-sides, demos, and rarities from the likes of Kevin Devine, Anthony Green (Circa Survive, Saosin), Frank Iero, Taking Back Sunday, and Anti-Flag. The album features a healthy mix of full band performances and intimate acoustic tracks. Artists like Dave Hause, Allison Weiss, and Baggage make appearances as well with memorable tracks, while Lolo's live performance of "The Day After Tomorrow" closes out the hour and a half long album.
The tracks all work together because they touch on themes that are permeating our culture at this moment in time: discrimination, sexuality, equality, topics that we need to talk about on a daily basis as a collective culture. The fact that these points of conversation are translated into a massive musical compilation, with artists from various genres and walks of life expressing their points of view, makes this a must-buy compilation. And given that all the proceeds go to an incredibly noble and worthy cause just makes it that much more important.
