Review by Cassie Kolias
Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness, the newest project from former Something Corporate and Jack’s Mannequin frontman, returns with Zombies on Broadway, an album inspired by the city in which McMahon was diagnosed with Leukemia.
The album is an alternative pop, electronic, piano-fueled (of course!), concept album about New York City, that is reminiscent of Jack’s Mannequin’s Everything In Transit. In the way that Transit is a California-inspired love story, Broadway is about NYC. Unlike most albums, almost any track on Broadway could be a single.
Beginning the album with “Brooklyn, You’re Killing Me,” McMahon opens the song by speaking the lyrics, in a nod to Transit. Then what follows is an electric power punch of “So Close,” “Don’t Speak For Me,” and “Fire Escape.”
In true Andrew McMahon fashion, there are plenty of outer space references, most notably in the album cover and in the finale of the record, “Birthday Song.”
Zombies in Broadway captures the fast-paced, sometimes overwhelming appeal of New York City in a way that only McMahon could do.
