Aaron Gillespie is one of those artists that continues to amaze me. He is consistently breaking new ground musically, whether it be in Underoath, The Almost, or his solo career. Out Of The Badlands, is the next entry in Gillespie's solo endeavor, chronicling a time in his life that appears to have been rather dark. The album is nearly all-acoustic, give or take a few sections of songs, and is made up of a nice mix of both covers and original compositions. Re-worked versions of classic Underoath tracks ("A Boy Brushed Red Living In Black And White", "Reinventing Your Exit") and The Almost tracks ("Southern Weather", "Say This Sooner") are highlights. Gillespie even throws in a version of U2's "Where The Streets Have No Name" that could rival the band's original version. The original tracks help tell the story of Gillespie's darker timeframe, showcasing a more raw, stripped-down side than we've heard him before. "Raspberry Layer Cake" is one of the most honest tracks I've ever heard from him throughout his career, and it says everything that he's feeling without needing to ask what's it's talking about in an interview.
