On Friday night, rising alternative country star Orville Peck brought a stunning performance to San Francisco’s Bill Graham Civic Auditorium. Fans flocked into the venue, dressed to the nines in sparkly outfits and cowboy hats, playing off the image that the masked superstar has been cultivating for the last several years.

To kick things off, the show was opened by country artists Emily Nenni and Nikki Lane, who played as the venue began to fill with eager fans, guiding those in attendance through sets filled with traditional country originals, along with a few covers, like Nenni’s take on Terry Allen’s “Amarillo Highway’.

Walking out to Scott Mackenzie’s “San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hair”), the sparkle-studded, cowboy-hat wearing Peck took to the stage and launched into a barrage of hits that spanned a wide array of albums. It’s not entirely fair to call Orville Peck a straight-up country musician; his music pulls in elements of alternative and pop rock, fusing them with country roots. His deeper voice accentuates this fact, reminded me a lot more of the country stars of yesterday like George Strait and Johnny Cash.

With a massive twenty-song setlist that spanned four albums, along with a healthy addition of covers from artists like Ned Sublette and Hy Zaret & Alex North, Orville Peck brought a show for the ages to San Francisco, marking one of the more entertaining and energetic performances to hit the Bay Area this year.
