After a weekend that was filled with sweltering heat and humidity, a crisp evening breeze blew through the air at Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View as the legendary Stevie Nicks took the stage. Given that this one of only a few shows that Nicks was scheduled to be performing this entire year, the massive Bay Area crowd knew that they were in for something special. The iconic Fleetwood Mac musician let the crowd know that this felt like a homecoming affair, and that remark was met with a roar of applause. While Nicks was born in Arizona, she attended San Jose State University, met Lindsey Buckingham years earlier attending high school in Atherton, and went on to cement the Fleetwood Mac lineup that we know today. For all intents and purposes, this was home.

The show featured one opener, the endearing singer-songwriter Vanessa Carlton, who kicked things off with a pitch-perfect solo performance. Predictably, the loudest reaction from the crowd came when those first delicate piano notes from Carlton’s quintessential early 2000s hit, “A Thousand Miles”, reverberated throughout the crowd. While playing only six songs, Carlton’s performance was excellent, solidifying her as not only an accomplished songwriter but an impeccable choice to open a show of this stature. (Fun fact: Nicks actually officiated Carlton’s wedding back in 2013.)

Stevie Nicks took the stage around 9 PM, kicking things off with “Outside The Rain” before seamlessly flowing into Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams”. The transition was impeccable, proving to be one of the best moments of the evening. Throughout the dynamic sixteen song performance, Nicks crystallized her status as one of the greats, weaving a tapestry of stories, songs, and memories together that enchanted an audience filled with several generations of fans. Songs from both her solo career and Fleetwood Mac were present, along with an encore that featured covers of Tom Petty and Led Zeppelin classics. Select stories would precede songs, but the show flowed incredibly well, wrapping up close to 11 PM.

While it should be noted that Fleetwood Mac songs got some of the biggest crowd reactions of the evening, the crowd went wild when the phaser-tinged guitar notes of “Edge of Seventeen” kicked in. Whether she’s fronting one of the biggest bands in history or out on stage doing it all on her own, Nicks is a captivating performer, and truly one of the greatest to ever do it.
