To those who have followed this outlet for any amount of time, it might seem a bit unusual for us to cover an act like The Band CAMINO. They’re not pop-punk, they’re not metal, they’re not “heavy music”. But dammit, they’re great, and they still fall under the category of rock. Good music is good music, and The Band CAMINO is as good as it gets in the pop/indie rock spectrum of music. The phenomenal three-piece are currently on the road promoting their 2021 self-titled album, and with shows selling out all over the country, I had to see one of their shows for myself, camera in hand.
The show was kicked off with a thirty-minute set from an up-and-coming new act called Hastings, the solo project and brainchild of artist Matt Hastings. Hastings got the crowd warmed up with tracks from his debut EP (currently available now). These songs got everyone in the mood for flor, a spectacular alt-indie rock act that elevated the energy in the room even more. Based on the reaction in the room throughout their forty-minute set, I have a feeling that they’re already poised to be a big name in this genre. They too have a new album set to be released on May 6th titled Future Shine, so be on the lookout for music from both of these acts.
The Band CAMINO took the stage right as the clock hit 9 PM, launching into an exhilarating twenty-song set filled with catchy hooks, explosive choruses, and groove-filled moments that just made you want to get up and dance. The band launched in 2015, but with only two albums to their name thus far, the buzz that’s surrounded them (at least in my inner circle) has been inescapable since their first release dropped. Vocalists Jeffery Jordan and Spencer Stewart trade off impressive vocal lines while drummer Garrison Burgess pounds away at the drumkit in front of him.
While there were a few moments that found Jordan speaking to the crowd, talking about the meanings behind some of the songs, the band were really just focused on delivering great song after great song to the sold-out audience. One of the biggest highlights of this show for me was the singing from the crowd; whether it was during the falsetto riffing on “I Think I Like You”, to the memorable hooks on “California”, or during the closing of “Daphne Blue”, this crowd was completely into it and over the moon that they were in attendance.
I sincerely hope that I get to catch The Band CAMINO again. I can’t wait to see them get even bigger, and I fully understand the hype I’ve been hearing about them throughout the last several years. With undeniably strong songwriting abilities and considerable showmanship, this is a band that is poised to take on the alternative-indie rock landscape. Looking forward to watching it happen.
