My first introduction to The Plot In You came in 2013 when they released their sophomore record, Could You Watch Your Children Burn. Vicious and biting from the first opening riff of “Premediated”, the metalcore act were quick to cement themselves amongst the scene as the next frontrunners of the scene. As the years went by, their sound began to evolve into areas that combined modern pop sensibilities with the heaviness of metalcore, differentiating themselves amongst their peers in the industry. On Saturday, November 5th, the four-piece genre-melding act brought an impressive show to Roseville’s Goldfield Trading Post, accompanied by some of the best bands currently in the game.
The show was opened by Cane Hill, a dynamic band that has been making a name for themselves over the last few years. With only two studio albums under their belt and a helping of EPs, Cane Hill have done a great job making themselves stand out amongst other heavy acts in this scene, and they’re just to be a powerful player in years to come. While The Plot In You did put on an incredible show, my favorite act of the evening was AVOID, a relatively new act out of Washington state. Shameless SF covered their August pop-up show in Sacramento, and they’ve stood out as one of the definitive new acts in this wave of genre-bending heavy artists. While I’m still privy to calling their Café Colonial show my favorite, AVOID’s half-hour set made the crowd’s energy reach great new heights, as frotman Benny Scholl captivated a crowd with his trademark enthusiasm and charisma.
There was an extra bit of baggage attached to the set from Silent Planet that evening, who had rejoined the tour after experiencing a near-fatal accident when their van flipped on black ice on their way to a show. After announcing a GoFundMe page would be available, money poured in with fans donating over $70,000 to help pay for the damages and get them back on the road. There was a palpable feeling of gratefulness in the air, and this added some emotional weight to the band’s performance. The fans in attendance fed off this energy as the progressive metalcore act blazed through a dynamic and emotional set list.
Amidst the haze of venue lighting, The Plot In You made their way to the stage and played a near-flawless performance comprised of songs mainly taken from their most recent album, 2021’s Swang Song. Frontman Landon Tewers delivered a commanding vocal performance, switching between high-pitched screaming and melody-laden vocal hooks. Songs from their fourth album Dispose, were thrown into the mix, along with two tracks from their third studio album, Happiness In Self Destruction. It was clear that by omitting material from the first two records, The Plot In You are making it clear that they’re not just a straight-up “metalcore” act. They’ve worked to diversify their sound and stand out amongst the breakdowns, and it works well for them.
In fact, each band on this lineup is, for the most part, evocative of this relatively newer genre-fluid aspect of heavy music. While this music is rooted in the depths of metalcore, the future of metalcore and its success lies within the ability to transcend genre. As evidenced by their performance on that packed Saturday evening, The Plot In You is leading the charge.
