For years, I had heard about Alter Bridge and the kind of show they brought forth. I will admit, I was never much of a Creed fan when I was coming into the music world (3/4 of the Alter Bridge lineup is comprised of the founding members of the popular 90s/2000s rock act) They were stellar musicians, but it just never clicked with me. Alter Bridge only recently came onto my radar in the past few years, but the band has been together since the early 2000s, releasing their debut album One Day Remains in 2004. They are currently on the road supporting their sixth studio album, Walk The Sky, so when I learned that they would be coming through San Francisco’s Regency Ballroom, I jumped at the chance to cover this show.

The four piece act (vocalist/guitarist Myles Kennedy, guitarist Mark Tremonti, bassist Brian Marshall, and drummer Scott Phillips) played for only an hour and a half, but I honestly could have watched them play for another two. The level of musicianship was astounding, and I hate the fact that I had seriously underestimated this band. Alter Bridge’s set was comprised of material that came from nearly every one of their six studio albums, and they pulled no punches when performing for the packed crowd. Tracks from Walk The Sky like “Wouldn’t You Rather”, “Native Son”, and “Godspeed” were met with roaring approval, as were songs from further back in their catalogue like “Isolation” (AB III), “Metalingus” (One Day Remains), and “Blackbird” (from the album of the same name).

The show featured two stellar supporting acts: Deepfall, a promising new rock act from Grand Rapids, MI, and Clint Lowery, the solo project of Sevendust’s impeccable guitarist and songwriter. Lowery’s set seemed to be the most well received (other than Alter Bridge), and based on the powerful performance he put forth, it was clear to see why. This was a show comprised of artists that made performing a full-scale rock show look effortless, and I sincerely enjoyed every minute of it.

If you are a self-proclaimed fan of rock and metal, and for some reason turned a blind eye to the work that Alter Bridge has put out over the last fifteen years or so, I’m asking you to give them your attention. They’re a band that can not only put out incredibly strong material, but also have the performance chops and showmanship to back it up.
