On a typical cold and rainy night in San Francisco, fans packed themselves into one of San Francisco’s best tucked-away venues, Great American Music Hall to play witness to the return of Britain’s You Me At Six. Fresh off of the release of their aptly titled sixth studio album, VI (released in October of last year via Underdog/AWAL), the five-piece rock act traveled from across the pond to deliver a near-flawless performance to its rabidly devoted fan base.

One of the more unique aspects of this show was the diversity among the acts on the full lineup. machineheart, a four-piece alt-pop act, opened the show with a performance that almost veered into dream-pop territory. It was hard to put any kind of specific genre to a band like them; influences of indie, alternative, pop, and many more flowed throughout their thirty minute opening set. They were followed by DREAMERS, an alt-indie act that have slowly but surely making a name for themselves, as evidenced by the number of fans in attendance that pushed their way to the front to make sure they were as close as possible, singing along to every word. The energy definitely went into a more upbeat realm during DREAMERS’ performance, and anyone who was in attendance can vouch for me that it was a pretty remarkable performance for a rising act.

You Me At Six took the stage and wasted no time. Josh Franceschi spoke only once the band were eight songs into their 17-track set, performing for nearly two hours into the night. A majority of material came from VI, but they made sure to drop in numerous hits from throughout their impressive career, including “Lived A Lie” (Cavalier Youth), “Loverboy” (Sinners Never Sleep), and “Night People” (Night People). In addition to a high-energy, mosh-filled performance of the Sinners Never Sleep hit “Bite My Tongue”, the band returned to the stage for a three-song encore (which they let everyone know they’d be doing in advance), concluding with Hold Me Down’s “Underdog”.

Whether they’re opening at a small club, headlining theaters around the country, or arenas throughout Europe, You Me At Six are a band that time and time again put on a truly impressive performance, bringing alternative rock back to its roots while still maintaining a modern sense of self and identity throughout their music. They’re not to be missed, and surely have much more to come, just six albums into their career.
