A Conversation with Daniel Handler: Inside 'A Series of Unfortunate Events
Narrated by Charlie Jane Anders
Swedish American Hall
San Francisco, CA
January 22, 2017
Dear reader, it is my solemn duty to report to you....well, if you've read any of Daniel Handler's (aka Lemony Snicket) critically acclaimed A Series of Unfortunate Events novels, you know exactly where that phrase is generally headed. The author of the popular young reader's novels and one of the writing minds behind the highly revered Netflix series of the same name made a stop in San Francisco at the Swedish American Hall for a rather intimate chat, something that you really can't get anywhere else other than an event like SF Sketchfest.
The panel, moderated by Ms. Charlie Jane Anders, gave an incredibly special look into the career and writing mind of Mr. Handler. The author spoke about his process writing the Netflix series (fact: he hosts the Writer's Room for the show at his home in the Bay Area as opposed to in Los Angeles), working with director Barry Sonnenfeld, his views on the movie adaptation that came out several years ago, and so much more. It was fascinating to learn about how much logistically went on behind the scenes. Hearing more about Handler's writing process gives you even more insight into how he really is able to bring this strange and miserable, yet enchanting, world to life on the page and the screen.
After the discussion and Q&A were finished, Mr. Handler stayed, greeted, and signed autographs for every patron in attendance. I stopped to say hello and get my notebook signed, and he was incredibly kind gentleman. The event was a wonderful addition to SF Sketchfest, and hearing Mr. Handler speak only makes me want to plunge headfirst into the literature he's written even more than before.
