Heavy music is still very much alive in the music scene, and Far From History are making damn sure that people know that. Their newest EP, Gallows Hill, was released in the middle of August, and we got to sit down and chat with the guys about the process behind writing the album, channeling aggression into music, and much more.
Let's talk a little bit about the Gallows Hill EP. It's heavy as hell. What did you set out to accomplish, as a band, with releasing this EP? Essentially, what step was this in your guys' career and what were you hoping fans would take away from it?
Well you’ve said it! We wanted to go for a much heavier sound than the stuff we’ve done before hand. We went for this sound because it felt appropriate for the time and what we were all going through in our own lives. Not to say this is definitely the path we're going to go for in the future, but it was the right choice for us at this point in time. We always just hope that the fans enjoy the music as much as we do and hopefully if needs be, it can help them through some hard times like it did for us!
For Gallows Hill, about how long did the entire writing and recording process take for you guys as a whole? This includes pre-production, writing and recording, and getting the final mixes/masters for the album.
It’s hard to tell with us as we are constantly writing hundreds and hundreds of songs for instance, we had a lot of ‘Gallows Hill’ already written when we went into the studio for our ‘Eyes, Mind & Matter’ EP. The recording process in total took just over a week, the songs only had some minor changes from pre-production when we went into the studio, (apart from the major quality improvement thanks to our producer Meyrick De La Fuente).
I really liked the song "A-Negative". What was the song about, if you can tell me a little more about the subject material surrounding it?
The lyrics of this song have a theme of abandonment and being left by the ones you love when you need them most. Just before the breakdown are the lyrics ‘now i look back, where did we go wrong?’ This refers to when you are abandoned by someone or something and you just can’t understand why it has happened.
The name "Gallows Hill" evokes rather haunting imagery when I think about it. How does the name of the EP play into the theme of the EP, if at all?
Gallows Hill was actually the name of the village our vocalist Tony was brought up in. We decided to use this as the name because it represents where we have come from and how we can push forward into our futures, not only this but the name itself sounds pretty brutal!
These are the last two questions, and I ask them to every artist that I interview as a way to close things out. First: what kind of message, if you have one, would you like fans to walk away with after listening to your music?
Our message is almost the same as why we named the EP ‘Gallows Hill’, we want everybody to believe that they have what it takes to push forward and progress with there lives, no matter what life throws at you there’s always a silver lining and you can always improve yourself to be what you want to be.
Finally: what does music mean to you?
Music is everything to all of us, we all work in very demanding jobs and invest all the money we earn into touring, recording and equipment. Some people would say this is a waste of our money but it’s everything we want and everything we love so why wouldn’t we invest all of our time into it. I think music of all genres can have such a massive effect on peoples emotions and outlooks on life and i like to think that we can be a part of this in a positive way.
