I was lucky enough to attend the Coheed and Cambria show that took place in San Francisco, CA at The Masonic in San Francisco earlier this year. The show in Sacramento was on the same scale in terms of lighting and set list choices, but this time around found Coheed performing in a more rock club-oriented atmosphere. This is the allure of Ace of Spades, the premiere venue in Sacramento, CA. Fans of any artist performing here flock like hell to pack the venue to the gills under any circumstance, and Coheed and Cambria’s stop on their highly coveted tour in support of The Color Before The Sun was no exception to this act. The show was sold out well before the band arrived in town, so it’s safe to say that it was going to be an evening of epic proportions.

Equal Vision Records newcomers Polyphia took the stage to kick off the night with their unique brand of instrumental rock. The Plano, TX three-piece performed for a half-hour to warm up the crowd before the one and only Saves The Day stepped up and played a fantastic set (although the crowd was incredibly lackluster during this portion of the show. For whatever reason, I haven’t the slightest idea why.)

Coheed’s set began as usual, with vocalist/guitarist Claudio Sanchez and guitarist Travis Stever. Sanchez is armed with an acoustic guitar while Stever uses his Les Paul (on the Clean setting) to perform “Ghost”. Without any sign of stopping, other than a minor technical difficulty, the band launch straight into “In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3”. The band powered through sixteen highly powerful tracks, including a cover of “Drain You” by Seattle’s own Nirvana.

Coheed and Cambria are a band that are ridiculous force to be reckoned with in a live setting. Their fan response is one that all bands should envy; I don’t think that a single lyric wasn’t sung back to the band by its ravenous crowd throughout the duration of the entire show. I’ve learned that no matter what setting, whether it be a rock club like Ace of Spades, a theater like The Warfield, or a small-scale arena like The Masonic, Coheed and Cambria are a band that will thrive and prosper no matter what, conceptually and musically.
