Every day, I am working towards achieving my dreams. Millions of people are. While the dreams themselves may differ from person to person, chasing your dreams is a universal activity that unites us as a human race. Kalin & Myles demeanor, songs, and stage shows all embody this idea.
Which is why when the guys stepped out onstage to a nearly sold-out show at the San Jose State Event Center on Saturday, the conclusion to their full-U.S. tour in support of their ‘Dedication’ EP, I can understand why Myles Parrish broke down crying. I can understand why Kalin White broke down crying. I can understand why there was this indescribable feeling of achievement that pulsated throughout the room, particularly at the beginning of the performance. The guys weren’t the only that felt they had accomplished something; this was a performance for the fans.
It’s one thing to play to a massive crowd in another city, even in another country. It’s an intense feeling. But I can’t imagine the feeling of stepping out onto the stage in your hometown, and seeing everything you’ve worked towards materialize right before your eyes. The guys played to seven thousand people. Everyone knew the words to their songs. They caught onto every single cue, crowd chant, every little tradition that I’ve seen the guys sprinkle into their shows over the past few years (The “When I say Kalin, y’all say Myles” chant, for example).
I was introduced to Kalin & Myles’ work about a year ago, and while I may not listen to it all the time, I have an immense amount of respect for those guys. It’s refreshing to go to a hip-hop/pop show every once in a while and see a clean act. The duo knows their fan base. They know how to speak and connect with them, and do it without using obscenities in order to seem “edgy” (The Janoskians, however, do not… but that’s for another time).
To Kalin & Myles: Keep chasing your dreams, guys. The road in front of you is limitless.
