Astronautalis - Cut The Body Loose

Astronautalis
Cut The Body Loose
Producer: John Congleton
Label: Cargo Records

I'd been getting a plethora of rock records around the time that this album arrived in my inbox, so I was initially thrown off. Upon further listening to the amalgamation of genres that is Astronautalis (aka Andy Bothwell), I could understand where the hype was coming from. It's not a genre or a record I would gravitate to over and over again, but it's an intriguing listen. There's a lot of different influences that Bothwell throws into the mix, and the results are fascinating both production-wise and thematically. There's far more of a hip-hop and rap influence in the record than there is rock, so keep that in mind. But during the moments where indie rock plays a part in the construction of a track or a melody, it's rather effective.

Bothwell also has a good flow when rapping, one that isn't overly produced or over-exaggerated. This really allows for the listener to hone in on what he's saying and let the music compliment rather than hear it get washed up behind a bunch of backing tracks. It works.
