It's been clear for awhile now that The Artery Foundation and Artery Recordings are not just reigning forces within the metal scene, but it's clear that they are tastemakers and influencers of what makes it into (and subsequently, not into) the modern metalcore scene. Their appeal is reaching worldwide, as seen through their recent signing of Moscow, Russia natives Wildways. The five piece metalcore outfit have a debut album offering in the form of Into The Wild, a twelve-track journey of anthemic choruses, chugging breakdowns, and glitch vocal effects.
The band recruited producer Cameron Mizell (Sleeping With Sirens, Memphis May Fire) for the album, and the chemistry is there. The tracks aren't too overdramatic or overbearing, and each production feels like it gets the point across (both lyrically and musically) while giving each track room to breathe and form its own life. Too often do we hear metalcore records that have twelve songs sounding exactly the same; here we have slight variations in each track, and they're enough to help distinguish each track apart from itself. There are a few tongue-in-cheek lyrical moments here, but it's nothing like, say, Attila.
Wildways is a band that we should pay attention to in the future. They're just getting started, and it'll be interesting to see what appeal they'll have in the scene as time goes on and more tours are announced. It's only the beginning of 2016 and, much like this year, these guys are just getting started.
