Kingsland Road - We Are The Young

Kingsland Road - We Are The Young

Sometimes people refer to pop along the lines of Justin Bieber; other times the word is referring to a lighter side of modern rock. In this case, the result of Kingsland Road’s debut album is a pop-rock jam with hints of mainstream pop seeping into the infections choruses. This was refreshing to listen to. In a world that’s full of electronic-tinged pop hits all trying to fit in with the status quo, here’s a group that has simply said “fuck it” and made something great outside of the norm. I am absolutely a fan of electronic music and pop of all kinds, but it’s really nice to turn on a record and hear guitar, bass, piano and drums in their simplest form. There’s a good deal of production throughout the album, but not so much that it overshadows the vocal performances of the four members: Matt Cahill, Joe Conaboy, JJ Thompson, and Josh Zare.
For me, the standout track is Freedom. That chorus is beautifully executed. “Walk Away”, the album’s tenth track, was fun as well. It is reminiscent of some of Fall Out Boy’s more recent work, but with more distorted guitar work woven in throughout the song. Kingsland Road undoubtedly have some work to do in the future if they plan to further cement themselves in the pop music world, but this is a damn good start for the quartet. I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of these guys in the future. Just give it some time.
