Punk bands really should get more credit. Sometimes, simplicity in music really is key. In this case, Beaumont, TX’s own Purple nail this idea of punk music. (409) is an album that is legitimately just pure fun to listen to from start to finish. While I listened to it in my home on a pair of headphones and through studio monitors, I imagined myself listening to it in a variety of venues, from the small punk clubs I’ve frequented in San Francisco, to the sunny (yet freezing) beaches in Santa Cruz. The Texan three-piece comprised of guitarist/vocalist Taylor Busby, drummer/vocalist Hanna Brewer, and bass guitarist Joe “Prankster” Cannariato really know how to build a song, even when it’s just stripped to the bare essentials (guitar, drums, bass, and vocals). High-end technical electronic production that has made its way into rock music recently isn’t present here. In this case, that’s a good thing. Punk rock was never meant for that. Tracks like “Thirteen”, “Double Nickels”, and “Liquor” are fast paced, gritty party punk anthems that will have people moshing for ages. In my humble opinion, the next time you have a house party and want a change of pace from the electronic scene, grab some drinks, all of your friends, and turn this album all the way up to 10.
