Justin Timberlake
The 20/20 Experience
Hey Bieber, move over. The real Justin is here. He’s back. While his return to music has been delayed over the past six years as he took time to focus on a career in acting (managing to snag a spot as the notorious Sean Parker in the Oscar-winning The Social Network), he’s finally back. His music this around isn’t exactly “pop” though. Yet that might be considered a very good thing, considering the current status and form of today’s mainstream pop genre.
Timberlake’s “The 20/20 Experience” has a refined sense of maturity. After all, he’s already brought sexy back. Where does one go from there after accomplishing such a feat? The first track of the ten song record boasts horns and strings, conjuring images of an early 1900s club filled with ladies and gentlemen surrounding the bar, draped in suave clothing. Fittingly, the album shifts into “Suit and Tie”, the first track that fans were given a taste of a couple months back when he first leaked news of new music. From this point on, JT provides listeners that have been awaiting his return with an incredibly solid album.
However, let’s not call it a comeback. “Comeback” is a term for someone who fell to the bottom and is trying to climb their way back to the top. JT has always been at the top. He just hasn’t been in the music game for a bit. With a star-studded (and truly hilarious) guest host spot on Saturday Night Live the weekend before the release, a week on his buddy Jimmy Fallon’s show to create some hype, and a first week’s sale totaling nearly 800,000 units (and counting), there’s nowhere to but up. Welcome back, JT. Music has missed you.
